Michael Dean - "Lost Boys"
"Hello, My name is Michael Dean. I am an aspiring musician and songwriter."
What do you enjoy most about your artistry?
It honestly just fills my soul. When I am performing, or writing, I am constantly reminded of “Oh, that’s what I am meant to be doing” It honestly just gives me the purest form of happiness.
Who or what most inspires your song-writing?
Personal situations will sometimes inspire my writing. Mostly though I write about my friend’s experiences or things they have come to me about. Then I try to find a clever way to convey that into a song.
Tell us a little about your new release. Is there a story behind the title? How long did it take you to make this single/album?
The song we just recently put out is called “Lost Boys”. I wrote it while living in Tokyo Japan last year. It’s about when Wendy comes to Neverland. We all know the story. She falls in love with Peter Pan and he doesn’t want to grow up. Which frustrates her. This song follows a lost boy who falls in love with Wendy. He sees her feelings for Peter and basically says “If I could, I’d go with you, I’d take you home.” My favorite line from the song is: “She’s my happy thought, but I’m just one of her Lost boys”
Which bands/artists are you currently influenced by?
I have always loved John Mayer and his lyrics. In my opinion no one compares. Recently though I have been very influenced by LANY and The 1975.
Are you working on any collaborations? If not, would you like to? – With who?
At the moment my friend Felicity and I have a new project coming up and have been collaborating for several weeks now. I honestly would like to, and have been told by a mutual friend that a Cody Jay collaboration would be very cool. If he was up for it, I would be excited.
What are your upcoming tour/performance plans?
Currently I hold a residency in Huntington Beach at Legends Surf City. I have been playing House of Blues a lot as well. I am currently booking a summer acoustic tour from Los Angeles to Orlando.
How much do you let critics affect your music? Do you find it hard to focus on the positive side of things, and if so – how do you keep yourself motivated to keep going?
I try to never let critics have a say in what I do. At the end of it all it’s really nobody’s business but my own. The songs I wrote are that way for a reason. That’s why its called artistry.
How important do you feel social media is in your career? Do you enjoy it? Please expand upon your opinions, and what you’ve learned while making music in 2018.
It wasn’t until a few months ago when I actually realized how important social media is for artists. What a great way to get what you do to the world. More exposure is always a positive. Avenues like this blog are great, especially when someone is so unknown like myself. So thank you very much for reaching out to me to do this interview.
What else does the year have in store for you?
By the end of this year you’re going to see more originals, and the release of a mix tape. That’s 100% certain.
