"I’m Keanna O’Quinn (but my friends call me Ke), I’m from Chicago, and I’ve never met a French fry I didn’t like."
Tell us a little about your new release. Is there a story behind the title? How long did it take you to make this single/album?
My latest single, POTENTIAL, just dropped. I wrote & recorded the song last summer with my friend and co-writer Lucian White. The track is produced by DJ Grumble & Lucian put his heat on it. When he played it for me and I knew immediately that the song had to feel like a conversation.
The song took a couple of hours to write and record. I was somewhat inspired by Bruno Mars. He seems to have a lot of fun on the writing side of things. And I wanted to bring that to this song. I feel like once I opened the door for playful energy, the song kinda wrote itself.
Which bands/artists are you currently influenced by?
I’m honestly influenced most by my peers--other indie artists that aren’t signed to labels & don’t have a million followers who are still writing & recording & performing regardless of the lack of fanfare.
What do you enjoy most about your artistry? I.E. Creating music, the process, the fame, the recognition, co-writing? Etc.
I like it all. But I really enjoy the moment something is complete. There’s something about having a spark of an idea and seeing it in its full manifestation that is super gratifying. Whether people like it or not is always a gamble. But nothing compares to having an idea for a song and seeing it progress from that little idea to a fully produced project. I like seeing things through to the end. People liking it is just the icing on the cake.
Who or what most inspires your song-writing?
Love. I wish I could say something really deep, but I always end up writing about love. And its not just romantic love. I’ve written about having an argument with my brother and wanting to reconcile with him. That’s still love. The good, the bad, the ugly. It all inspires me.
Are you working on any collaborations? If not, would you like to? – With who?
I have some collaborations in the works, but nothing solid just yet. I’m open.
What are your upcoming tour/performance plans?
I have a project I’d like to release this year and that’s taking up all of my brain space. I’ll be able to share tour plans once the project is where I’d like it to be.
How much do you let critics affect your music? Do you find it hard to focus on the positive side of things, and if so – how do you keep yourself motivated to keep going?
Critics? What are those?? Kidding. I used to like being criticized. I have always felt it pushed me to be a better version of myself. I’m in a place now where I don’t need to hear outside voices in order to be motivated. I don’t mind critics. But they usually are people who don’t have the guts to do what they really want to be doing in life.
How important do you feel social media is in your career? Do you enjoy it? Please expand upon your opinions, and what you’ve learned while making music in 2018.
Social media can be important. It’s what you make it. I sometimes enjoy it. A few months ago I began to pull back a bit just to focus more on myself. I realized that when you really think about it, social media is just people minding other people’s business. That’s a golden recipe for counter-productivity. I noticed I didn’t write as much or feel as creative when I was spending a lot of time on Instagram especially. So I really limit myself when it comes to social media. But I think it’s a great way to share your art!
What else does the year have in store for you?
This year is still unfolding. I had the pleasure of starting the year by landing a song on a Crest commercial. That was a lot of fun! I was tapped for another TV project (that I can’t talk about yet) that will air in March. Lots of unexpected things are happening. I’m looking forward to more cool stuff unfolding 2018.
Finally, where would you like to see yourself five years from now and what's your ultimate ambition as an artist?
In five years, I will continue to be happy & healthy. I know that I will still be doing what I love. And hopefully, it will be loving me back.
