The 1 Class: "Love War"

Hey there! Please introduce yourself. Where do you currently live – and how is the music scene out there?

Hi! We’re Jacob Dollaske and Chris Holben from Lansing, IL and we’re The 1 Class. There’s a pretty thriving local music scene out here. Royal Skate Shop is a relatively new local venue down the street from where we grew up and it’s always packed. Bands from everywhere make a point of hitting Royal and the best thing about it is the diversity of the scene. Just a whole lot of music loving people hanging out.

What do you enjoy most about your artistry? I.E. Creating music, the process, the fame, the recognition, co-writing? Etc.

Just being able to create music of our own, no rules, just the way we want to make it. There’s nothing better than hearing a finished song and being able to feel the time, work, and raw emotion that you put into it.

Who or what most inspires your song-writing?

We’re inspired by the new music we discover, sick drum beats and fills, and the many people that reach out to us to tell us how much our music means to them.

Tell us a little about your new release. Is there a story behind the title?

‘The Love War’ is a four track story about the challenges many people face during crucial turning points in a relationship. The title track, ‘Love War’ is about the war of emotions between the two characters in the story. They’re completely wrong for each other, but just can’t let go, they’re in a love war.

Who produces your music? Can you or the producer provide some insight to what that process was like? What was the inspiration and/or creative process?

We’ve always produced our own music, but had a bit of help on the EP from Justin and Dan over at Atlas Studios in Chicago. The creative process usually starts with either a catchy riff on guitar or a few layers of synths to map out the direction of the song. Once the synths and guitars are structured, the drums and vocals are written, then we take the backing tracks to the studio to track it all out.

What are your upcoming tour/performance plans?

No upcoming tours announcements just yet.

How much do you let critics affect your music? Do you find it hard to focus on the positive side of things, and if so – how do you keep yourself motivated to keep going?

Not at all! We make music that’s true to us because that's the only way we can really be The 1 Class. Sometimes it is hard to stay positive when we have big dreams, but making music is all we do, so we won't stop. We will keep pursuing what we love, and as we watch our fan-base grow, it motivates us to keep going further, for them.

How important do you feel social media is in your career? Do you enjoy it? Please expand upon your opinions, and what you’ve learned while making music in 2017.

Social media is very important in this new music industry model! We love being able to communicate with our squad while keeping them updated and involved in our music. We enjoy all aspects of being a band in this digital age because we can reach almost anyone instantly, meaning limitless exposure if you know where to look. The marketing aspect of social media is a pretty big hurdle that we all have to leap over in this era, but it’s a challenge we’re ready to take on as well. We’ve learned that the internet has created an immense opportunity for artists to truly flourish to their full potential, free to create and connect directly with their fans. It takes consistency, hard work, passion, and persistence to gain momentum, but each new face in the crowd makes it all worthwhile.

What else does the year have in store for you?

We’re filming a music video for the title track, ‘Love War’ at the moment which will be out October 6th, as well as a new single October 20th. This winter is looking just as eventful!

Finally, where would you like to see yourself five years from now and what's your ultimate ambition as an artist?

Five years from now we want to be selling out shows across the world and just be able to make a comfortable living doing what we love to do. And although we don’t believe too heavily in awards, a grammy would be kinda nice. While we’re at it let’s add a slot at Lolla...

Please provide us with any/all social links where people can connect with you and your music:
