Alex Slay: raw talent, skill, charisma, and stage presence. Here at The Silent Sounds, we wanted to take our time to get to know Alex & what has led him to where he is today. Not only is he skilled - he's also humble.

Enjoy the read :)

At what age did you realize you wanted to be a musician? Which bands and artists were you, or are you currently influenced by? Have those influences changed much as you've gotten older?

I wanted to be a musician when I was 14 years old, around the same time I was started picking up the piano. Music was one of the first things that gave me a voice and allowed me to express myself the way I wanted to. I would spend hours sometimes even days in my room just creating different songs and melodies, it never felt like practice because I loved every second of it. Listening to music was always a big part of my life. I grew up on Queen, Styx, Guns and Roses, Kiss, etc. as well as some country and even some rap. In high school, I was a pop- punk band, but later found jazz and soul music and I’ve been influenced by that ever since. Ray Charles, Marvin Gaye, Thelonious Monk, Stevie wonder, Al Green, James Brown, Allen Stone, Alicia keys, Lauryn Hill, John Legend, Michael Jackson, Bruno Mars and I could go on and on about hundreds of other artists that influence me.

What do you enjoy most about your artistry? I.E. Creating music, the process, the fame, the recognition, co-writing? Etc.

Creating music as well as co-writing with another individual is probably my favorite part of being a musician. Fame has never been something that has appealed to me so that’s not really a significant factor to me. I love the process of creating music, watching it start from such a small melody or lyric into full songs which then turn into full length albums. When it comes to co-writing it's like two worlds coming together and creating something that you couldn't do on your own. Music is something that I believe needs to be shared and only reaches its full potential when others are a part of the project. That way you have different perspectives in the song therefore, different vibes that different types of people will enjoy and relate to.

Who or what most inspires your song-writing?

Inspiration for songs comes from various places. That's why I always have my phone with me. I probably have over a thousand voice memos of small ideas of melodies, rhythms and lyrics. That's usually where I start from then try to make rough tracks and then lyrics. Sometimes the lyrics comes first and then other times the music comes first. It's always different and that how I want to keep it.

Tell us a little about your new release. Is there a story behind the title?

This is my second release, so I am still fairly new to this business and environment. I learn every day from my mentor Cody Jay who helps me with advice and just straight up wisdom. As for the Song "Straight and Narrow" the title relates to the listener’s moral path or solid ground. For me it’s about being in a relationship or situation knowing that it's not the best thing for you. Yet you somehow still find yourself roped back into it. The constant back and forth brings you to a point where you begin to lose yourself, but the beauty in that is you’re able to rediscover yourself all over again.

What are your upcoming tour/performance plans?

I am going to continue finishing this EP and then tour with that EP which will lead me into creating my first full length album.

Which band or artists (living or dead) would you most like to perform with and why?

Allen Stone has been my favorite artists for about eight years now. He's one of my biggest musical inspirations, so being able to play a show with him whether it be in a coffee shop or a stadium would be a dream come true for me.

How much do you let critics affect your music? Do you find it hard to focus on the positive side of things, and if so – how do you keep yourself motivated to keep going?

I've been lucky enough to have such an amazing support system from my friends and family. I love hearing people’s criticism of my work, it's what keeps me growing at all times. I have always been my biggest critic. I am way harder on myself than most people are on me. My family and friends are a big reason why I stay motivated. They see more in me than I see in myself, but I have my own personal drive that pushes me to be a better version of myself every day. I will always remain a student, the second you think you know everything you know nothing.

How important do you feel social media is in your career? Do you enjoy it? Please expand upon your opinions, and what you’ve learned while making music in 2017.

Funny you should ask this question, because I am awful when comes to keeping up with my social media platforms. The last thing I want to do is write about myself and ask people to go support my music. However, in this day and age I believe that social media is a huge factor and it will make or break you in this Industry. It is something I am currently working toward improving on.

What else does the year have in store for you?

I don't know what this year has in store me but I know I will finish my EP later this year. So, the real question is: What do I have in store for the Year?

Finally, where would you like to see yourself five years from now and what's your ultimate ambition as an artist?

Five years from now, I want to be touring the world with a huge band with bass, guitar, keys, organ, back up vocalists, horn section and my little brother Zack as my drummer. Playing shows every night and just celebrating life through music with millions of people.
